Jim Michaels, who built our plane emailed me this note re the "HOT pitot
tube."

"Your pitot tube was replaced for this exact reason.  Somehow it was
left on over night in the "hangar" at Ojai and burned off the chrome. I couldn't see any damage what so ever to the structure so I just
replaced the unit itself.  I don't think there is a problem here at
all."

So, another data point on the curve.
