Around 1998 I bought an 88 RX-7 for $900 from a guy who could not get it to run.  Towed it home and found the only problem was that it was flooded!  Leaky injectors were apparently a not uncommon problem for certain year models.  Shut it off with the fuel pump and it worked great.  That was the core for my engine.

Thanks Tracy and Marv, this gives me a good idea of what to pay for an older RX7. My wife wants a
sports car, red, wich this one is. I will keep looking.

I'd pass on this one unless it had a pristine body & interior & a rebuilt engine.  That price is way high for an average 88.

Help, My son is looking at an 88 rx7 100 miles away for me .
2 things make me nervous.
1. The coolant color is brown.
2. Loses power after 4000 rpm, starts to pick it up somewhat over 5000.
It has 94000 miles, asking 3400.
Should I still consider this, or look for another?
Thanks, sorry for the off topic, but you guys are the only rotary guys I know.

Hi Lonnie,

I purchased an '87 RX7 with 110k miles on it 3.5 years ago for $800.  I drove
the wheels off of it for 2.5 years during which time I put an additional 130k
miles on it (at least... I drove it everywhere, and I do mean everywhere.)  I
found it on Ebay, less than 100 miles from home.  I purchased it to get
experience with the rotary... my attitude was that I was not going to replace
any failing non-critical systems, but do whatever it took to keep it on the
road until the engine gave out.  By the time it hit 240k miles I'd replaced
the water pump, radiator, a rear end (thanks to Oil Express or one of those
places, where they didn't put the plug in properly after a fluids change), a
set of plugs and wires (pm only, the engine was running fine with the parts
that came on the car, but what the heck <g>), a clutch, instrument cluster,
brakes, etc... nothing that you wouldn't expect to last over 150k miles.  When
I parked the car to start driving something a little more comfortable it was
still running.  They are amazing pieces of machinery.  Anyway, my first take
would be to keep shopping... there are lots of good deals out there.  $3400
sounds a bit much (unless it's a well dressed Turbo-II convertible.)  FWIW.
