In racing this is handy, as it is less stuff to unhook when the engine needs changed. 
 
 
This is the filter I use. 10 micron absolute. 550 pound burst can. Flows about 10GPM. Has a bypass set at 11 pounds. Has anti drainback. 3/4" by 16 thread mounting. 
 
Always, flow is from outside (the little holes) to the center (big) hole.

Actually, both.  I am currently concerned about how to move the oil filter from the top of the engine to some where more conveinent so both of the components will be needed.
