Pretty good description Ed,
Also look for a darker track from the center electrode to the shell. Of course if you have tracking you will have fouling shortly afterward.

Bob, this is what I have observed. The ceramic will be dark colored - dark charcoal - almost black. But, that would probably look that way with carbon fouling also. But, when I shine a strong light on the ceramic cone, light glitters off of what I believe to be lead crystals - if I am correct then that could be a sign of lead fouling. In other words, carbon fouling appears to leave a dull charcoal/black color whereas the lead apparently leaves dark metallic crystals of some sort. That's the best I can conclude.
