Bob, this is what I have observed. The ceramic will be dark colored - dark charcoal - almost black. But, that would probably look that way with carbon fouling also. But, when I shine a strong light on the ceramic cone, light glitters off of what I believe to be lead crystals - if I am correct then that could be a sign of lead fouling. In other words, carbon fouling appears to leave a dull charcoal/black color whereas the lead apparently leaves dark metallic crystals of some sort. That's the best I can conclude.

Ed,
Can you tell by looking at a plug if it's probably a SAG plug? Is
there any way of testing the plugs without flying them? If there were
some way to tell if that was the problem I experienced I would like to
find out. I've squirted oil in the chambers to protect the engine while
it's sitting around so that might complicate inspection.
I bought a CD system for my 1952 Ford back in the early '60's.
Unfortunately the '52 Ford was positive ground and the CD system was not
so it didn't work at all. I then tried to build one from plans in a
book using the stock coil. I never got it to work very well and gave
up on the project.
