I grew up flying out
of a strip that was a regular hangout for seagulls. The strip was 3500
feet long and many flights on a normal takeoff were between 50-100 feet in
altitude at the departure end of the runway. This happened to be the
same altitude the birds were at after they realized there was a plane coming
thier way, so the only way to avoid a collision was to hold the plane down and
fly underneath them. They don't dive out of your way when very close to
the ground.
