The strip was 3500 feet long and many flights on a normal takeoff were between 50-100 feet in altitude at the departure end of the runway. This happened to be the same altitude the birds were at after they realized there was a plane coming thier way, so the only way to avoid a collision was to hold the plane down and fly underneath them. They don't dive out of your way when very close to the ground.
