Another favorite airport on the way to Redmond is
Smiley Creek (U87), just above Sun Valley, Idaho. It's in the valley below
the Sawtooth Mountains and is about as beautiful as it gets. The strip is
ankle deep thick grass, long and smooth enough to land a Beech Starship, Mooney
or RV6. The little 5:00x5s on LNC2s might be marginal without
Debongers and a good soft field technique.
The
state maintains a Campground on the airport with excellent bathroom facilities
and extra thick grass for camping. If you want accommodations, a Trading
Post across the street has meals, milkshakes and rooms (including some
comfortable Teepees). The last time we were there you could hear the Elk
bugling in the morning. If this sounds interesting call ahead for the
latest strip info (208) 334-8775 and reservations for lodging (208)
774-3547. Call me if you want to talk about it.
