low voltage would make it worse but there is a problem with the solenoids if they are improperly selected. the difference in the solenoid types is the time it takes to make or break. The longer that is, the more damage to the contact surfaces. More damage = more arcing = more heat = welded shut.
make/break time and max break current remain interesting specifications to look at when you choose the replacement.
