It's really important to get the G3 on your IPad for the times you are not around a wifi signal- like in your car or airplane! I think everyone with an iPad would agree that the 15-25 bucks a month for the data plan pays off 100 times over with the flexibility it gives you ( assuming you fly relatively often cross country). I can't count the number of times it has really been convenient. For filing a flight plan change, checking notams, winds, email, and telling your wife you will be home for dinner via iChat while sitting in the airplane getting gas or in the FBO bathroom in the middle of Kansas. As to the faux GPS, it's been discussed on here before if you search. The GPS is real, but it uses cell tower positioning data for where to find the satellites and ring in quickly as opposed to the Almanac/Ephemeris data in an outboard GPS. If you ring in on the ground and take off without powering down the GPS, you will track the GPS signals up high all day and don't need an outboard one. However, if you turn it off to save battery and then wait a while, it takes a long time to ring in ( too long to be useful, like to monitor an approach). I've used foreflight since it was released and absolutely love it for everything except complex fuel planning. If it had what FltPlan.com offers in this regard, I might never look at anything else. I don't have any experience with WingX since Foreflight has been so good. I fly cross country all of the time and literally can't imagine flying without it. Get one with 3G and with either software bundle you will love it,guaranteed.

Randy, thanks. I'm trying to understand whether i want the G3 or not, vs. just with wi-fi and maybe add a Bad Elf later. What else does the G3 give you besides the faux GPS?
For mounting, I thought mine might fit right above and cover the throttle and mixture, which I work without looking at anyway. Not much room in there.

Terence, I purchased an iPad just for the wingx application. So far both the iPad and application have performed flawlessly . I have the iPad with the built in gps and love it. I am looking for a screen cover that cuts down on the glare however. I would also like to find a way to mount the iPad in the airplane as it is cumbersome in the cockpit. Some sort of stick mount may work. Hope that helps.
