I know you have decided to walk away, but in case you had not, here are my $0.02.
Very very early in the process, I would want to inquire into what happened to the paperwork. The paperwork may be missing because what it shows is detrimental to the valuation or marketability. The paperwork may be missing because it is being held hostage by someone; maybe an ex spouse, an ex business partner or someone who has a financial claim but does not know enough to file a lien with the FAA.
For me, the missing paperwork would raise some serious questions not only about the construction and the damage history but also the big picture surrounding the airplane. If I considered moving forward, the examination would be extra thorough with a much higher threshold to walk and even after all of that, the price would reflect the risk of the unknown.
