Re Garmin:  My understanding is that Garmin, like King, will only work
through franchised dealers.  Has anyone tried to install a Garmin unit
themselves?  I'm wondering if something could be worked out with a
sympathetic dealer, e.g., buying through them and installing with a checkout
from the dealer.

MB Antennas:  This is a stone simple installation, since you're (supposed to
be) flying right over the top of the MB.  Just use a Jim Weir-type copper
foil strip mounted anywhere in the bottom of the fuselage.  I put mine under
the elevator push rod.  Total cost maybe a buck.

Autopilots:  Surprised to see Pat Weston's panel list included the Sandel
HSI but no A/P.  In my book, the A/P would have a far higher priority.  The
S-Tec 50 I put in my ES was the greatest thing since sliced bread.  If I
assigned utility scores to every item in the panel, the autopilot would
probably be right near the top.  As far as installation goes, the install
kit I got from Lancair for my ES turned out to have been designed for the
original factory prototype, which had a completely different layout for the
aileron pushrods.  The brackets for mounting the servos had to be completely
re-made to fit the actual production kit layout.  Presumably this has been
remedied by now, but the $500 or so charged for the install kit seemed like
a great deal for what was in it.
