I went through a lot of hassle over the issue of engine certification with my
RV6A. Lycoming had the AD on the aluminum oil pump gear a few years ago. My
O-320 had come out of a Piper and it was a certified engine, but if I didn't
comply with the AD (which I personally felt was a CYA by the manufacturer),
then my engine would no longer be a certified engine. But since it was in an
experimental, at least I had the option not to comply.
It's a long story...I finally did comply (my oil pump gear was in perfect
shape), but I can tell you from experience that if you tell people you have a
non-certified engine in your airplane, it will be difficult to sell to the
average joe-pilot.
