Hi there,
The flox sealed mine just fine. I think I sanded the tube a little so
it wasn't so tight fitting. Dab some petroleum jelly on the threads of
the "donut" so you can clean any flox that might get on the threads. Install the drain after the flox has cured. Don't put too much flox or
you risk plugging your drain as you described.

For those of you who've installed the Advanced Flight Systems AOA:
How did
you bond the aluminum donut (into which the upper-port drain valve
screws)
into the phenolic tube? The aluminum donut is a very tight
fit--tight
enough to wipe all the flox I applied off the inside of the tube
and pile it
up on the donut.
