The voltage will drop below 13 volts when the alternator is not keeping up
(or has failed. It is simple enough to have a low voltage warning light
set
for 13 volts.

You could easily rig a low volume "mosquito" buzzer or beeper to the
master switch. Loud enough to notice when the engine is not running, but
quiet enough to be completely drowned out by the engine noise.

I am fortunate enough to have an AV-10 engine monitor, and a friendly female
voice will make an announcement through your headsets of "low
voltage....Warning....low voltage".  It does the same for out of parameter
oil temps, pressure, water temp/pressure, rpm, etc. You set the high and low
limits, and it will give a voice warning if any parameters are exceeded and
the unit's display will also begin flashing until you press the cancel
button on the face of the unit.  Nice to have someone else helping to
monitor the engine instruments.  It constantly scans all instrument
readings.  Paul Conner
