John,
I've been thinking about your turbo failure, especially since I have the
same turbo.  Do you think that running 8-10 lbs of boost with the waste gate
forced closed contributed to the failure.  I may be wrong, but I thought
that normally the stock turbo only produced about 6 lbs of boost.  I have
the stock waste gate controller on mine, which is just a pressure diaphragm,
and I have a pop off valve set at 7 lbs.  I've heard that the waste gate
isn't large enough on the stock turbo, and with low backpressure (i.e. a
short straight exhaust pipe) that the turbo can quickly over boost and get
fried.

I'm curious about how many other people are using the 89-91 turbo, how long
they've been running it, and what boost levels they are running.

Are you looking for a stock Mazda turbo, or an aftermarket one?
The one I have [had] was a used '91 stock single stage, so that would be the
easiest replacement.
What's you're price, Rusty? Direct email is sladerj at bellsouth dot net.

Do you think that the turbo was about to go anyway?
Probably. There was defintely some play in the bearings.

or is it just not the right turbo for our application?
Depends what you want it to do for you. I think it should stand my planned
usage.

Were you running a wastegate?
I had it closed with the manual push/pull cable.

What MAP were you running when the turbo blew?
just under 50 inches - maybe 8 - 10psi of boost

Rusty’s turbo is the same as yours, do you plan to replace it with an
Identical turbo?
Yes. I think so. This time I'd like to have one thats in good shape to start
with.

Todd and I (and Mecanair and perhaps some others) are also running that
turbo.
I don't think there's any problem with the stock turbo running at reasonable
boost speeds. If a rebuilt one lets go, then I'll upgrade.

John
