Do you think that running 8-10 lbs of boost with the waste gate forced closed contributed to the failure. I may be wrong, but I thought that normally the stock turbo only produced about 6 lbs of boost. I have the stock waste gate controller on mine, which is just a pressure diaphragm, and I have a pop off valve set at 7 lbs. I've heard that the waste gate isn't large enough on the stock turbo, and with low backpressure (i.e. a short straight exhaust pipe) that the turbo can quickly over boost and get fried. I'm curious about how many other people are using the 89-91 turbo, how long they've been running it, and what boost levels they are running. The one I have [had] was a used '91 stock single stage, so that would be the easiest replacement. What's you're price, Rusty? Direct email is sladerj at bellsouth dot net. >Do you think that the turbo was about to go anyway? Probably. There was defintely some play in the bearings. >or is it just not the right turbo for our application? Depends what you want it to do for you. I think it should stand my planned usage. >Were you running a wastegate? I had it closed with the manual push/pull cable. >What MAP were you running when the turbo blew? just under 50 inches - maybe 8 - 10psi of boost >Rusty’s turbo is the same as yours, do you plan to replace it with an Identical turbo? Yes. I think so. This time I'd like to have one thats in good shape to start with. >Todd and I (and Mecanair and perhaps some others) are also running that turbo. I don't think there's any problem with the stock turbo running at reasonable boost speeds. If a rebuilt one lets go, then I'll upgrade.
