Yes. I did this long ago, before first flight. Never had any problem with it.

    Unfortunately I've not tested it yet. After that mod and a little other work, I completely removed every last item from my firewall in order to install an unbroken sheet of fireproof blanket. I also want to redo all my firewall penetrations as it had become a little piecemeal as I'd added more stuff as finances allowed and new stuff became available.

Can't see much time on the horizon right now either has in addition to my regular workload I've got a kid that in addition to baseball has decided to become a goaltender for next hockey season, so I've got to spend a week of my summer vacation taking him to a very expensive goalie school not to mention working to pay for all the new expensive goalie gear that he'll need. And no doubt grow out of shortly after.

   When I started this project I had no responsibilities. None. It was so easy back then.

Hope you are able to repair it without trouble. Something else to consider if you haven't already. I also previously drilled my front iron (rear in the plane.. well at least in a tractor plane) for the oil outlet. Now the only reason I don't plug the hole completely is to allow oil to the relief valve. So long as that valve doesn't open there is no flow through the little bushing into the front cover. Not sure that would make any difference at all, but I did consider it when making my bushing very robust knowing it wouldn't have to allow full flow.

To add insult to injury, after loosing my engine over Pearland Regional Airport (LVJ) a few weeks ago, which we seem to be able to attribute to some gunk found in the Mistral fuel rail clogging the small return orifice, I am also having low oil pressure AGAIN.  I have yet to pull the front cover, however, I am leaping to the conclusion that the front cover o-ring is causing the problem.  I have tried to address this issue several times now.  I have installed the extra support ring provided by Maztatrix.  I use no gasket and still have a problem.

 

Similar to you, I installed a small tube in the passage last time I messed with this to hopefully prevent the oil ring blowing out....if I understand correctly due to cold start pressure.  However, unlike you, mine was just pressed in aluminum tube modified to fit with holes drilled in the tube to still allow flow if the tube dislodged.

 

How is your modification working?  What thoughts do you, or others, have?

 

I think I know the other things that could cause low pressure and do not think they are the issue (such as the pump retaining key slipping out, pressure regulator falling out as it safety tied etc).  It is a new oil pump replaced the last time this problem happened.

 

I hopefully will get out to the hangar I rented at LVJ tomorrow and remove the cover to know more but am curious about your success or lack of.
