This isn't really new information. Rotarynews.com had this information a couple of months ago, although not the exact end date. Mazda would like to resume/continue production, but needs their new fuel economy initiative to pay off in the 3 and 6 to get the company back to profitability before they can afford further rotary engine work.
The RX-8 has been in production more or less unchanged for 8 years, which is a very long time. Sales are at low levels and still falling and Mazda cannot afford to redesign the model or a new RX-7, knowing that the fuel economy would likely still be terrible with the existing 13B Renesis. I'm not sure why the 16X has taken so long and still isn't ready - Mazda designed a new rotary engine every couple of years back in the 70s - but I can't really argue that they should continue with the 13B Renesis in the RX-8. They are making the right decision here.
The real problem is that once you stop and lose momentum it's very hard to get started again. There's a very real risk that they will simply never resume production, no matter what happens with their piston-powered cars.
It also means that in 10 years or so, Renesis parts availability will be in the same sad state as traditional 13B parts availability is now.

Well, I guess that means the piggy bank that has been
