Bobby, I have a belly mounted Hushpower as well, but mine slopes
away from the fuselage aft of the firewall. The belly panel is painted aluminum
about 2-3” above the muffler at closest point and shows no sign of heat
damage. I bolted a vertical attach tab to the firewall, made a SS circular
strap to go around exhaust pipe, match-drilled all of the above, including
muffler and collector, then welded a ¼” rivet to the SS strap, followed
by another ¼” hole which has an AN bolt lock-wired in place for good
measure. I attached the tailpipe in similar fashion and supported it on my
landing gear Vees. The assembly is fairly heavy, so you will have to support it
at both ends … i.e., some rivets to belly panel are most likely required.

Bobby, I have my two Hushpower II mufflers slung on the
bottom. The top of the mufflers are approx 2-3” from the bottom and
my paint. I have no additional shielding although a sheet of SS with some
sort of insulation (fiber fax) would probably be a good idea. But, I
never go around to it and the paint is still there – no flaking, no
bubbling. Now since I have 2 mufflers, they likely do not get quite as
hot as one muffler with all the exhaust going through it. So your mileage
may vary

Subject: [FlyRotary] Moving muffler to belly
I've
had the plane down for a few weeks making several changes. I would like to move
my muffler out of the cowl to the airframe belly. How much space should I leave
between the top of the muffler and bottom skin? My exit fairing hangs down
about 5" below the airframe. What have others done for heat shielding \
paint protection? Since the floor pans are installed any riveting will
have to be with blind rivets. Don't really want to put a bunch of extra holes
in the skin for this experiment. Any advice or pictures would be
appreciated.
