Heart rate? Yes, you could say it
got my attention, Al.
You are right, I had grounded
(touched) the container against the aircraft and was myself leaving against the
wing as I was not unaware of the potential hazards. But after 4 decades
of pouring fuel from plastic containers – what could go wrong?.
But, I do recall that when I
attempted to lift the 5 gallon container higher with one hand (about 30 lbs
when full) while holding the funnel with the other – that it was a
bit of a struggle and I broke contact between the container and the
funnel. Immediately the fun began.
So now you know why I put up with lead
fouled plugs {:>).
Thanks, Al. I figure I have just about run
through most of the potential problem areas (many that no one else ever seems
to encounter {:>)) – think of me as a rotary beta tester (perhaps
alpha tester would be closer).
I do have a certificate presented to me
that is entitled “Lightening strikes, 1, 2, … 6 times
(or More) award “ enumerating a small section of the “interesting”
events that have occurred to me in adapting the rotary to flight. I wish
I could say that the list had not grown since I received it from RWS in
2002. However, the number of “events” has easily doubled
since then. I do believe I ran afoul of the rotary grimlins at some early
point in the endeavor {:>).
But, fortunately all have left aircraft and me in
one piece (well, I have used up one wheel pant and tire, a few seat cushions
and I’m certain a few years off my life span). When being chastized
by one of my sisters after one event, I mentioned my “guardian angle”
to which she reply – “yes, Ed, but you just remember – she’s
not getting any younger either!” Ah, nice to hear that.
Keep the fire inside the combustion chamber
and exhaust guys!

Geees! Ed. What a frightening
experience. It probably took about 2 days for your heart rate to get back
to normal. You broke the rule of hose connected (somehow) to the fuel in the
tank
Yes; I treat the plastic can just like I
would a hose. Spout in contact with the metal flange; flange grounded to
the fuel by the cap chain.
The fuel trucks have conductors in the
hose. So a metal plane connected to the truck connects the fuel to the hose.
Al
P.S. Ed; please try not to learn any
more lessons the hard wayJ. Yes, we value your experience, but we value you more!
