Geees! Ed.  What a frightening experience.  It probably took about 2 days for your heart rate to get back to normal. You broke the rule of hose connected (somehow) to the fuel in the tank

 

Yes; I treat the plastic can just like I would a hose.  Spout in contact with the metal flange; flange grounded to the fuel by the cap chain.

 

The fuel trucks have conductors in the hose. So a metal plane connected to the truck connects the fuel to the hose.
