Put the IVO prop on and ran with it 'bout a week and half, or so, ago.   REALLY makes it seem like an airplane.  Seems to be running better each day as we diagnose and cure problems.

On that note (and this is cross posted on canardaviation.com) is what oils are recommended during break in.  I searched the archive and could not get it to respond, but I am all but certain we have discussed type of oil, how long to use during break in and what oil to move to and when.  Seems I recall dino oil being used at first, drain, change filter/oil and run. After x number of hours repeat a couple of times before moving to synthetic.  If so, how long on dino.  How do you compare break-in road miles to hobbs hours?  As Dave stated, we have about 1.5 hours right now as we troubleshoot for smooth, consistent and cool operation (gee, new tuning and keeping a new engine install cool in a Houston summer while Tracy is out of town.......good timing Chris)

All the best,

Chris

Again, forget about tuning the engine until you have the prop on!

I know you don't want to hear that, but I must have wasted at least ten hours "tuning" the engine without prop (and that was the hard way: soldering shut the holes in the carb jets, drilling a smaller size, etc.)

Might as well get used to having that prop out there. Just make sure the plane is tied down, etc.

Well, after a couple of hours of wire testing (buzz testing etc) I was finally able to track down my sparkless problem.  Seems that when I first started my wiring I was short some of my expensive aviation crimp connections and I used lower quality butt connectors.  Well, one of the cheap ones did not hold the wire in and the two white/white&black CAS wires came out, thus no spark.   I have used very few of these cheaper connectors and have replaced most of the few I have used........hadn't made it to these yet.  Just one more thing I am happy to discover on the ground.

Since I knew little if anything about wiring 6 months ago and now I feel pretty confortable, I am amazed at how different the quality is on the cheaper and the the better conectors.  I now even know what to look for and have found some much better quality ones at local hardware stores....even though the ones on the plane all came from aviation specific vendors.

The engine still starts inconsistantly....one time easy, then not starting at all until I hold my tounge juuuuust right, or so it seems. It also seems to still be running rich. Which is not suprising since I have not done anything to it since it was not running.  Now that it is running again though, I can start to actually TUNE the  beast.

Thanks for y'all's continued support, insight and wisedom.

All the best,

Chris
