A tip for soldering 'D' connectors: I always plug the
connector into a mating connector before soldering. If the plastic gets
soft, the mating connector holds the pin in alignment until it cools off
again.

This is a great tip, but
everyone should note that he said "a mating connector", not "the mating
connector". In other words, don't plug it into your EC-2 or EM-2 while
your soldering.
