Joe,
Overflow is different from a pressurized expansion tank. I have both. The air gap needs to go at the top of the pressurized part of the system.

I’ve got an auto type coolant expansion/overflow tank. I put it right next to the oil dip stick so I can check water level when I check oil. And yes, I know that the coolant level in the overflow tank doesn’t guarantee there is a full radiator – but the alternative is removing the cowl every time I fly.
