I don't agree that the weight penalty is minimal, George.  I'll bet the lower, mid and upper sections together weigh close to 35-40 lbs (even more if you throw in the Mazda TB which weights 5 lbs).

My latest intake manifold  (upper and mid) weighs 6 lbs + weight of lower stock NA manifold I use - which I have milled a lot of metal off of - weights perhaps 5 lbs.  So I save 25-30 lbs.  Having built an "overweigh" RV I can tell you the ozs soon add to pounds (Kilograms) to the tens of pounds until I ended up about 120lbs overweight empty.  That was before painting it and putting in upholstery.

That's like tying a 60 lbs bags of concrete onto each gear and going flying with it - wish I had paid more attention to every oz.  Its like I fly with two people in the aircraft instead of just little old me.  You can tell it mainly in climb but it affects top speed as well.  Tracy Crook on the other hand is  a weight frantic and his very light RV 4 just out climbs me as if I were sitting still.

Yes, I have trimmed some of the excess weight, I used to have 44 pounds of batteries and now down to one 14 lb battery, have probably trimmed at least 10 lbs off of intake manifold weight, etc.  But, the aircraft still weights more than I like.

Wouldn't make much difference in a car, but every oz counts in an aircraft (personal opinion of  course)

Group
Tell me what I'm missing, with a '91 13b manifold base plus a 83 upper & mid section I get 21" from face to throttle plates (the optimum length?) . with a "plugs up" installation it all will fit under my cowling, the weight penalty is minimal. Why try to re-engineer what Mazda did?

Georges B.( this probably will not have the same effect as the oil injection question)
