Actually, that feature dates back to usenet groups. It
was a common feature of *N*X-based list servers, as a way
to conserve scarce disk space. By the time that Mickeysoft
servers ascended to their present level of coverage, disk
space had become (relatively) cheap, so it wasn't routinely
implemented.
