I bought my Velocity in NH.  I would have had to pay >9% sales tax in NY where I lived, and real high registration fees.  I registered it in NH, rented a PO Box (in one of those ship stores so the address doesn't look like a PO box), all for about $60/yr. I rented a tie-down at the airport there, all for <$200 /yr and sub-let it for ~$150.  Why couldn't you CA folks do that in AZ?  Or UT, NM, etc.?

The NH airport I rented tie down at is covered with corporate jets from NY and CT where everything is high.  Sort of like registering a corporation in Delaware.  Or, when you get tired of being "Californicated", just move to TN where hangars rent for $150 and there's NO registration AT ALL.

Several ways to skin a cat ... Jim S.

Folks,

This is a response I wrote the other day to a feller asking about California
taxation on the Cozy list.

I have my own story to tell, but it's too long for this and not germain to
rotaries. Suffice to say it is bizarre.

Dan,

I escaped from California, your area, and on purpose.
Orange County(or whatever county you base your plane in) Is authorized to
collect an annual personal property tax based on a percentage of the value
of your plane. I guarantee that they won't waive it.

The State Board of Equalization doesn't care for a minute where you bought
your material, you'll get hit with a use tax as soon as the FAA tells them
you've registered the plane. You might as well get the material at Spruce
because they are only 18 miles or so from your house. You'll save a bundle
on shipping, you can inventory before you accept the material and the use
tax becomes a non-issue. Borrow or rent a Pickup truck.

In California, try to never look too prosperous, They want a cut.

Don't try to hide anything. They are absoluteoy implacable in their

pursuit

of your money, and they have developed extortion to a science. They also
have sovereign immunity, which means that you have no recourse against any
little thing they may think up to do to you, even if you win your case in
court.

Good Luck,

Jack Ford (Enjoying the snow in Eastern Washington).

Here is a question that I had not given enough thought to.

How much is this project going to cost me in fees?
Fees to the FAA?
Fees to the State of California?
Are there any property taxes to deal with?

I got an e-mail from a suppler this morning that said there is no sales

tax for

shipping into California, but there may be sales tax consequences later

on

by

the state of California. Anyway... it had gotten me thinking about the

various

non-materials costs of this project.

Anyone want to comment?

Dan
