I'd recommend Leesburg, VA. It is about 45 minutes from downtown via "The Greenway" toll road(entrance about 2 miles from Leesburg), to the Dulles Toll Road, to I-66 to DC. Watch out for the Camp David, MD Prohibited Area. Often, it is further expanded into a TFR if the Pres. is there. In addition to the huge Class B airspace (Baltimore, Reagan National and Dulles), there is an ADIZ over the top of that. Best to check the NOTAMS to see the rules on entering that mess. I'd recommend filing an IFR flight plan in and out. Leesburg is on the western edge of the Class B airspace.Manassas is a bit closer, but about the same amount of time and trouble. It is south of Dulles IAP. Leesburg is WNW of Dulles. On the way in or out, you could stop at Dulles for a visit to the new Air & Space Museum (Space Shuttle, SR-71, ... ). I've not been there yet, but they say it is a fabulous display of big toys.
Cheers,
John
What would be the best airport to use in the DC area from the point of view of NOT getting into trouble with TFR's and other associated nausea as well as providing an easy entry into the area from the north?
