I mentioned this tip a couple of years ago but it is worth repeating. After
the hydraulic lines are installed but prior to filling the hydraulic pump,
you can test and run the hydraulic system on shop air. I made a fitting with
a -4 JIC male fitting on one end and a quick disconnect on the other and
installed this in the pressure line from the hydraulic pump. The system can
be leak tested with bubble spray or squirt a little freon in the compressor
intake and use a freon sniffer. If you add a regulator you can adjust the
air pressure to counterbalance the gear legs. Using this method I was able
to fit the gear doors without crushing a single finger! When I did fill the
hydraulic reservoir and test the pump, the system was leak free and worked
the first time. No pools of red oil on the floor. No smelly hands. I know
that's missing half the fun, but you'll get over it.
BTW, if you shop air is prone to water, put a separator in-line and squirt
a little WD40 in the pressure line before coupling up the air hose.
