Rob,

Using a good quality paint gun is 100 times easier than one of those
annoying cans of spray paint.  With a good paint gun you have control over
air pressure, paint flow (air/paint mix ratio) and spray pattern.  With cans
of spray paint you have no control over anything.  It's kind of like
comparing an aircraft engine with Throttle, mixture control and propeller
controller with an engine that has an on/off switch only.  Sure a paint gun
is a more complex machine, but with an amazingly small amount of practice
you'll be getting good results ... with more practice you'll be getting
excellent result.

As Bruce said, there are training sites around that can help you. There are
also good books on the subject.  The key to any paint job on a composite
bird is in the preparation...a badly prepared surface assures a crappy paint
job.

Give it a try, with the right equipment it's actually a lot of fun.

FYI: in our shop we use a DeVilBiss "EGA" touch-up for small jobs and a
DeVilBiss "JGA" gun with a 2 qt pressure pot for larger jobs.  Anybody
considering a big job (like a plane) should consider getting a gun with a
pressure pot.  The pressure pot holds the paint and feeds it to the gun
through a hose, this makes the gun easier to hold and allows you to shoot
the gun at any angle including upside down and get it into tighter areas.
