I think it is very important to have a snug fit to prevent anything from falling down into the linkage below the seats.   A bolt or some other object could jam the stick during flight and you would have no ability to recover.  So you want the boot to have a tight fit to the stick, sealed on the seat pan so that nothing gets in from the pan area and a vertical rise on the boot so that items roll away from the stick if dropped.
