Steve has a good point that most pilots ignore.  If traveling to near your max fuel range, run one tank dry while at altitude and with a “way out” on the GPS.  Then you will never be left in a pattern with a gauge showing empty and wondering whether you have one gallon or three gallons in the tank you stopped using.  USE ALL OF IT, and think only about the tank remaining.  None of my present or previous planes (360, Mooney, Bonanza) lost more than a few seconds of power while switchin, and the rpm loss is gradual as the pressure lowers.  Just warn your passengers that things will get quiet for a few seconds, to save the upholstry
