Angier,
You do need something indicating your compass error, even if it is zero.  I have a tiny placard indicating "zero correction".
A compass rose is the way to go.  Your GPS doesn't know which way the nose is pointed, just where you are going.
Make sure you have everything turned on as if flying when you swing the compass.  It took me about five iterations to remove all error.

If you could adjust out all compass error, are you still required to have a correction card posted in the cockpit next to the compass?
Also, is a compass rose of any practical benefit for checking the compass, given given the accuracy of on board GPS units?
