I am planning to install inertial reel shoulder harnesses harness for the front seats of my LIV (under construction). I have seen the archived posts on the topic but am still not clear as to how (and where) to create acceptable anchor points for the upper (shoulder) harness in a non-pressurized IV. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. Also I am also looking for recommendations for a manufacturer. Thanks.
Nick,
I used a “turning block” for the upper shoulder harness point and mounted the inertia reel below the side arm rest. The belt passes from the reel vertically through a slot in the arm rest against the sidewall of the aircraft, then over the polished stainless turning block, then across my upper torso. The upper mount on the left side is just behind the door frame; make the right side symmetrical with the left…which is the critical mounting location because of the door frame and window just behind it. This accommodates a “three-point” harness. We all recognize that a 4-point is better; a 5-point better still, but this is almost the “automotive standard” and making an acceptable center fuselage mounting for the 4th point is difficult, if not impossible without really messing up your rear seat arrangement.
AMSAFE makes custom reels and harnesses. Give them an email or call: (602) 850-2777, www.amsafe.com. Tom Hodgden used to be their sales rep for experimental, but I heard he’s left them for other work?
Hope this helps.
