Rob,

The first thing that I did when I bought and moved my completed plane to Michigan was to call the State of Michigan Treasury Department. I didn't give them my name. When talking to any government treasury employee you must realize that the information they are giving you is to the best of their knowledge but is still just hearsay.

I do know that if you don't pay the correct taxes, no matter what they are, the fine will often equal the tax.

Again, you should use a call the state as one of the ways to find out what the appropriate taxes are. It is easy for the state to find your plane once it is really a plane. i.e.. that is, if you keep it at an airport.

The states all have inspectors that make sure airplanes keep at airports are registered correctly and have paid the appropriate taxes.

Any Arizonans out there who can enlighten me about aircraft taxes in Arizona?  According to my web research, experimentals and homebuilts pay an annual $20 registration fee.  I did not see anything about sales tax. My Lancair is not finished -- there is no registration certificate, no airworthiness certificate, merely a collection of items that is beginning to resemble an aircraft.  Before I do something stupid like call the state of Arizona and say "this is my name and address and my unfinished Lancair is in a hangar at this airport, do I owe you any money?" I'd like to find out what the true story is...

Thanks.  You may contact me on-list of off-list at rwolf99@aol.com
