I like the RV's.  They use just a little 2 inch tab made out of angle aluminum.  It has a short profile and looks nice.  Gives a nice little lever to lift.  They rivet it on, but I'm sure we could drill a few holes in it, flox it, and lay 1-2 bid over the support side to the canopy. 
 
That is of course you didn't paint the canopy yet.
 
I haven't done that yet, but plan to someday.  Mine is still in white primer.  I also only plan to do it on the pilot side.
