The latest iteration of the Glasair III gear system has both up and down
mechanical locks. But you are correct, prior to this improvement, there were
no mechanical down locks except over center side braces.

When I lived in the LA area and hangared my Lancair at Torrance, CA, my next
door hangar neighbor (a retired airline driver) owned a very nice Glasair III. One day at a near-by airport, he closed the airfield by landing and at the initiation of his turn to get off the runway, his gear collapsed.
Upon discussing the "incident" with him later, after the airplane had been trucked to his hangar, he informed those of us standing around to survey the
damage that his gear was held in the down postition by hydraulic pressure only. His gear collapse ocurred, according to him, because his airplane had lost hydro pressure. Since I have no knowlege of the Glasair systems other than what an owner of same has told me, I have to assume it is true.
When I heard that, I used the exact same phrase in your post above: "You've got to be kidding!"
