 I hadn't adjusted the screw since I finally got it properly adjusted several
 years ago.  Last time I looked, the lock nut was in place, so I assume it
 still was.  Parts probably bounced into the dirt about halfway down the
 runway, so I'll probably never find them.  There wasn't any side angle
 problem.  Gear leg looks good.
 
 So, the most probable explanation is that the screw backed out and the
 plunger worked on the snap ring over time.  I'll double check the right one
 when I swing the gear after repair.
