100 KIAS seems to be very typical during training, and I also agree that it is high.  I flew my first 20 or so hours like this and was spending WAAAAAAY too much time floating in the flare (though good for my touchdown control).

I understand the whole issue with flying faster (better forward vis, higher stall margin, etc.) but I have found flying an overhead or at least a "short approach" from downwind gets rid of that.  Personally, I am way more comfortable in the overhead and like the benefits (seeing the entire pattern, heightened awareness of you by other pilots, having the field made at any point once inside the airport environment, etc.) but it's not for everyone.

Bottom line is we need to be proficient in handling our planes at the bottom end of the envelope....high and hot is not always better...
