Hi Everyone,
This is in response to Legacy flight training! I built a Legacy and first flew the plane in May of 2002. I have over 250 hour in a Legacy in all types of weather,
and have landing experience in all types of landings from coast to coast. I have been reading all the comments on the training that is available for High Performance planes like our Lancairs. The last comments by John Huff have ALOT of truths. The Legacy if an excellent CROSS COUNTY AIRCRAFT with
both range and comfort. This plane in my opinion is designed to go fast and LAND FAST. My best landings were always the landing with a APPROACH SPEED OF 100KTS across the numbers and the plane will SEEK THE RUNWAY @ 85KTS AND BELOW. This plane should not land in a stall to land configuration. The Legacy has excellent high speed tracking on the ground roll and will come to a stop with mild braking. The brakes will fade if applied heavily and pads should be checked often. In the 3 years I flew my Legacy I replaced the pads 4 times. They were not wore out completely but I replaced them any time they looked HALF worn out. Before I did my first flight in the Legacy I had flown with both Don, and Grant and both would do the 100kts approach and one would do a variation of the shuttle landing with pitch up and drop both gear and flaps together and as the nose of plane would come down you would be at 100-110kts and then trim to land. The Legacy can be flown and is very stable at the 100kt speed for approach. When I would like to check out the scenery I would pull the RPM AND MANIFOLD PRESSURE back and fly the plane in a clean mode (no gear or flaps down). Most of my time before the Legacy was in Bonanza's (1500hrs) and found the transition to the Legacy not that difficult. The hardest part is staying ahead of the plane and respecting the speed that the Legacy and other like it are capable of.
I sold my Legacy last spring and am in the process of building a NEW Legacy with completion to be by the end of year. When I sold the plane the person who
purchased it needed to get 15 hours in the Legacy and was told he HAD to get training from either Lancair or High Performance training. He contacted them and after some scheduling delays met with pilot that John Huff flew with. After less than 4 hours of flight training I was told that they had a INCIDENT while the instructor was PIC and the plane was landed gear up. (pdf enclosed). This happened more than 3 months ago and I have talked to other persons that have had flown with this pilot and did not feel comfortable and stopped the training. The reason for me even bringing this up is two fold. I would hope that all the people that want to get and need to get training will really check into who they Hire. My guy who purchased my Legacy did Exactly what he was told to do and ended up with His new plane on the runway with no gear. He has since had to have the motor taken out and purchased a new prop. Not to mention all of the other parts and labor that he will have to purchase. The other point to discuss is that I was told that owner of the plane is going to have to pay for ALL THE DAMAGE with no payments coming from the persons that were PIC. YOU NEED TO KNOW WHO IS RESPONSIBLE IF SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS TO YOU!!!!
The Legacy is a plane that people should not be reluctant to either purchase or build! This plane is a pleasure to fly and with both common sense and flight training will give years of GREAT FLIGHTS. The Legacy is also fast enough to fly AROUND THUNDER STORMS !!!!!!
