Several pictures of the right
side of the engine compartment show a
control knob attached top the
upper engine mount. What's that for?
2) Your instrument panel picture
shows an air vent at the bottom of
the panel and another on the NACA
duct plenum against the right fuselage
wall. Where does the air come
from for the panel mounted vent?
3) Some time ago you mentioned
cutting off the baffling deflector
in front of #2 cylinder. I was hoping
one of your pictures would show
this, but no such luck. Did your
modification include both the cylinder
barrel and head, or only the
head? And did you cut off all of the
deflector or leave a little for old
time's
sake?
Charles,
1. Do you mean the pull knob obscuring the oil filter? If so,
it is connected to the old Cessna gascolator lower down in the pic to back flush
its' fuel filter out the little tubing exiting the bottom of the pic. The
knob is accessible thru the oil door and is pulled whenever the oil is
checked.
2. Both the left and right naca has an eyeball vent mounted directly to the
naca plenum. Each plenum also has a 3/4 inch tube exiting the top and is
SCAT hose connected to the vents at the bottom center of the panel.
Furthermore, the right plenum has an additional 1/2 inch tube out the plenum
top that feeds cooling air to the Garmin 430 in the stack. I get
enough air out of all the vents to be chasing charts and plates all over the
cockpit! You can see the avionics cooling tube as it passes fwd of the
dimmers, aft of the header tank vent line, thru a 45 fitting and into the back
of the 430:

3. Well, this is the best angle I've got. I did not alter the
area around the lower cyl fins because most of the heat is generated in the top
"stroke" area of the cyl. Yes, the lip (upward deflector) is
completely cut off and the bottom cylinder wrap was moved fwd a wee bit
(elongated screw holes) for more air. What spans the cyl fins is a
deflector with about a 1/2 inch opening above the baffle deck to try to
deflect air down the front of the cyl. Right now, cyl 4 is the hottest
followed by cyl 3.
