The "self Centering" is a fringe benefit of the improved struts.  The main reason to upgrade is the improved shimmy dampening.
If you have shimmy, check wheel bearing tension, tire pressure and possibly a bad tire (flat spot etc) and oil quantity in the strut.
If the problem persists, it's in the strut and will only get worse.  Shimmy can and has lead to strut failure / collapse.
Struts are expensive but are cheap insurance toward the cost of a collapse.
