Just a quick note on Lightspeed electronic ignition. Stuart Featherstone really sold me on this for my IO-550. I really didn't know too much about it. I sorta' took a leap of faith and went with the dual on my motor. After 40+ hours on my Legacy here's a few observations:
RPM drop during my ignition check is about 10 RPM from both to individual. No discernible roughness.
Turning one off in flight raises my EGTs by about 50 degrees with no engine roughness.
Starts right up Hot or Cold.
Cross fire redundancy, so if one coil (out of six) went bad I don't think I'd notice (probably a downside).
After going through the installation I can say it's very easy to install. Silly-simple easy. I told Lightspeed that the instructions make it seem complicated. It really isn't. Just about 5-6 easy steps. Klause could do a better job here for us non-engineer types.
I could argue the point that MAGs fail too, so Having two of the Lightspeeds that are independant is just as infallible as dual MAGs. I don't know that I could eliminate every risk associated to flying except take up boating. I'm really happy so far with the EI and feel it was a good decision to go this route (for me). I've just got the motor broke-in and haven't done any high altitude testing yet, so I'm curios as to how the power/EGTs-CHTs work out up high. We'll see.
