A Dukes pump should be positioned low enough in the fuel system so that it never "looses it's prime".
If you look back through the LML, you'll find quite a few entries on this subject.  Others have had to repeatedly change pumps that had a short life and my pump has a label warning against running dry (even briefly).
My pump is right under the header tank and some others put them low on the forward firewall with a heat shield.
 
One person wrote that an overhaul cost as much as a new pump. 
You might look at Airflow Performance as I believe they have an equivalent pump and may have better availability.
