Larry,
It would really be helpful if somebody would send me a data file
download from one of these trips where ice is encountered.
OR... just go up to altitude in the climb, and deliberately OPEN the
alternate air door (or is it on a hinge and spring - - that sucks OPEN
??) and continue the climb for a while and then send me the data file.
And, then try it again, but when it starts to get hot, then just add
some fuel flow to get the TIT down to 1300 to 1320F in the climb. The
temps should resolve themselves.
Again, there is no theoretical reason why the CHTs should rise into
unacceptable temperature ranges on days when icing is likely - - just
because alternate air is being used. I am not denying that is what you are seeing. However, what it tells
me is that there is something else going on that is not "right" that is
responsible.
Also, let me emphasize again that every L IV or IVP out there that I
have seen was very poorly baffled. I have re-baffled one of them and it
turned it into a completely different airplane. Just an amazing
difference.
It made such a dramatic difference that none of the IV/IVP folks believe
it when they talk to the owner.
Regards, George
