howdy all-
i know this topic has been discussed previously but it is time to decide on what controls to put on my infinity grips for my ivp propjet(cfs panel). lancair avionics has suggested elevator/rudder trim controls on the large chinese cap type control with aileron trim and efis mute on either side of it; obviously the push to talk on the pistol control and autopilot disconnect &cws on the slanted ledge button and ident on the lowest button. i hope this is reasonably clear.
does this sound reasonable or would anyone strongly suggest a different layout or other more important items on the controls? thanks,

[Having recently fought this battle on Ted Noel's IVP here's what we did... coolie hat is pitch/yaw trim. Left/right oriented SPDT center-off toggle inboard of hat switch is roll trim. (Trim switches locations based on factory recommendation.) Fore/aft oriented SPDT center-off toggle outboard of hat switch duplicates "next page" and "previous page" buttons on Chelton EAU. Trigger is A/P disconnect / CW steering. Thumb-operated pushbutton (thumb side mid-grip) is push-to-talk. Blue pinkie pushbutton at bottom of grip is screen swap for Chelton EFIS.
Many folks use one of the push-buttons to squawk ident... since most of the times you're instructed to squawk your hand is already at the xpdr setting the squawk code, we figured pushing the ident button was a natural part of that activity, and so we didn't incorporate that function into the grip. The logic of not incorporating a com or freq swap was similarly driven. (Pulling freqs from the flight planning pages of the GNS430 into the com section requires your hand at the radio, so swapping standby to active and loading the next freq into standby is all done at the same time, with your hand by the radio... while other systems will operate differently, the logic probably still rings true, so consider how you fly and your radio stack's operating requirements before committing a button or switch to an activity that can be accomplished more ergonomically at the stack.) The only tricky part to what we did was opening up the EAU and wiring the next/prev buttons into the DB25 connector to receive the parallel signals from the grip switch... there are open traces behind the buttons to accommodate this (it was planned for) and the header that hooks into the back of the DB25 connector atually makes doing the wiring pretty simple. The "tricky" part was breaking the seal on the EAU case that said the warranty was voided. :-< I don't "strongly suggest" this as the best way, just reporting an alternative to some of the more "conventional" (if there is such a thing) setups. I hope it helps you in your decision-making process. Additionally, support from JD at Infinity was great... talk with him about your setup, he may have some other suggestions to help with your layout.
