No, probably not. Makes me wonder how my Cessna 150 flew with the fixed pitch prop .....
Seriously, though, the fixed pitch works just fine with an aircraft with a small speed range between takeoff and cruise. Such is not the case with the Lancair, and with a fixed pitch prop the takeoff performance suffers a lot. The other guys have talked quantitatively (as have you) about the specific benefits of the CS prop, and I'm certainly planning on installing one. Unfortunately, the single-gear car analogy, while amusing, isn't really a good example here.
However, if money were the bigger issue, I'd rather fly with a fixed pitch prop than not fly while saving for the CS prop.
