Hi Bill.

Something I want to tell you about.  Yesterday I had my prop dynamically balanced.  Cost me $140, did it with a dampner I had on and then we had to remove it and do it again.  My prop had recently had a static balance . I have no reason to doubt that the static balance was not done well.   Jim Fackler  (jfackler@earthlink.net) did the dynamic prop balance work.  He has great references and does a very thorough job. I found out that the dampener does absolutely nothing except add 14 pounds.  After balance we ended up with a 20+ rpm increase in static max rpm and in flight I feel I got at least 20 rpm more.  And a 40% reduction in vibration which I can feel as less noise and more quiet-smoother in flight .  In talking to Jim, he tells me that he does lots of the racer guys, +++ many others.  BTW, we added almost 27 grams divided between two stations to get my prop in balance.  Not an insignificant collection of metal. Jim uses a sophisticated Accelerometer, photo optic sensor, Chadwick-Helmuth Vibrex plus for data acquisition.  He did the job, e mailed me a great report, graphs and all.  He also has some FAA affiliation. Totally first class.

Another plus is that the engine is put to much less strain, lasting a lot longer.  I also suspect the oil temps will be slightly lower due to less demand on the engine. After all the spending and fussing I have done, this is certainly the most cost effective mods I have ever done.

This type of analysis will also display signatures of many engine situations.  A good diagnostic tool. Glad to report that mine is just fine.

Thought you might also  like to share this with some of your Lancair guys with all those fancy expensive prop and engines.

I will get to you soon about the flying.

Best to you,

Steve
