Dale, have you seen Bob Nuckoll's "towel bar" firewall fitting item on his
web page? Very safe way to make firewall penetrations for your std wires.
There's a commercial source for same that is reasonable (in the $50+ range
vs $20-30 for roll-your-own parts)

That thought had occurred to me. It was mitigated
somwhat by the counter thought that the shorting out of the
wiring - in either case - would probably be the more urgent
issue should the engine compartment should get that hot. But any
immediate danger from fire intrusion could be prevented by a sheetmetal cup

However ... a little drilling upward yielded this.

It's still not definitive for fire resistance (factory
"type" doesn't necessarily mean factory equivalent
materials) this one, from the actual anufacturer, looks
much better - except their wire isn't Tefzel, and I can't fine a listing
for just the bulkhead halves and the pins.
I'm going to write them.
Also, a little more searching with AltaVista turned up
this:
http://www.americanautowire.com/new-stuff.htm
which offers a double advantage of allowing functional
grouping via separate connector blocks.
There was also a reference to a "C560" bulkhead connector,
as a GM replacement part. I'll have to spend some time
running that one down to an AC-Delco part #.
Can't do it now. Gotta get to sleep while I can. I'm
on 24-hour call this week, and I don't expect to get much
sleep.
